Today, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and Russian President Vladimir Putin participated in a video conference ceremony to mark the installation of the reactor pressure vessel for the first unit at the El-Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant. This event coincides with the celebration of the fifth Egyptian Nuclear Energy Day, observed annually on November 19.
The ceremony began with an introductory film detailing the Egyptian nuclear project. Following the film, Alexey Likhachev, the Director General of Rosatom, delivered remarks. Then, Engineer Mahmoud Esmat, the Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, spoke, followed by a recorded message from Rafael Grossi, the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency.
In his address, President Putin congratulated Egypt on the installation of the reactor pressure vessel. He highlighted that the ongoing collaboration between Egypt and Russia in constructing the reactor is a noteworthy achievement. This project is expected to generate the electricity necessary to support Egypt’s growing economy.
Putin emphasized that President El-Sisi’s direct support and personal oversight have been crucial in advancing the construction of the El-Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant. He also took the opportunity to wish El-Sisi a happy birthday.
The Russian President further noted that Russia is committed to supporting Egypt’s developmental ambitions through strategic partnership and cooperation. He pointed out that the long-standing bilateral relations, which date back decades, included Soviet experts who contributed to the construction of the Aswan High Dam and various major factories in Egypt. This partnership continues to thrive, as evidenced by the increasing trade volume and the enhancement of industrial cooperation, including Russia’s ongoing efforts to establish an industrial zone in the Suez Canal Economic Zone.
Moreover, he addressed the significance of the electricity generated by the El-Dabaa plant in bolstering Egypt’s energy security. He mentioned that the executing Russian company employs cutting-edge technologies while adhering to strict environmental standards. Furthermore, Russia is providing training programs for Egyptian personnel in the nuclear field, with potential applications of nuclear science and technology extending to areas such as medicine and agriculture. Putin concluded his remarks by expressing gratitude to all workers involved in the El-Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant project from both countries and reiterated his congratulations to Egypt on its fifth Nuclear Energy Day, while once again wishing President El-Sisi a happy birthday.
The official spokesperson conveyed that President El-Sisi also delivered remarks during the occasion. This was followed by a documentary showcasing the stages of manufacturing, inspecting, and transporting the reactor pressure vessel to the El-Dabaa site. Dr. Sherif Helmy, Chairman of the Nuclear Power Plants Authority, declared the readiness to install the pressure vessel for the first nuclear unit. He formally requested permission from Presidents El-Sisi and Putin to commence the installation ceremony.
