وافقت لجنة الإفراج المشروط في بريطانيا على إطلاق سراح السجينة ماريا بيرسون، بعد قضائها 39 عاماً في الحجز، لتسجل بذلك أطول فترة عقوبة تقضيها امرأة في تاريخ السجون البريطانية، وهو القرار الذي قوبل باعتراضات قوية من عائلة الضحية.
وجاء هذا القرار بعد تسع محاولات سابقة رُفضت فيها طلبات الإفراج عنها نظراً لتصنيفها كخطر على المجتمع. ومع ذلك، خلصت المراجعة الأخيرة إلى تراجع مستوى خطورتها، ما يسمح بإطلاق سراحها تحت تدابير رقابية مشددة تشمل ارتداء سوار مراقبة إلكتروني لمدة عام كامل، وحظر تواصلها مع أسرة الضحية أو دخول منطقتهم السكنية.
دوافع الجريمة
تعود وقائع القضية إلى عام 1986، عندما أدينت بيرسون بطعن الشابة جانيت نيوتن (23 عاماً) 17 طعنة حتى الموت دافعها الغيرة، لاعتقادها أن الضحية كانت سبباً في إنهاء علاقتها العاطفية.
وعلى إثر ذلك، صدر بحقها حكم بالسجن المؤبد عام 1987 مع حد أدنى للعقوبة يبلغ 12 عاماً. إلا أن بقاءها خلف القضبان لنحو أربعة عقود ارتبط بتقارير سلوكية سلبية؛ إذ أُعيدت مرتين من سجون مفتوحة إلى سجون مغلقة نتيجة انتهاكها الضوابط والقواعد.
مخاوف أسرة الضحية
طوال سنوات سجنها، استمرت بيرسون في إنكار الجريمة ولم تقرّ بها بشكل كامل إلا في مراحل متأخرة، وهو ما يغذي الرفض القاطع من عائلة المغدورة لقرار تسريحها.
وفي هذا السياق، عبرت «لين»، شقيقة الضحية، عن قلقها البالغ، مشيرة إلى أن التقارير الرسمية تؤكد استمرار معاناتها من اضطرابات نفسية ترتبط بالغلّ وتزييف الواقع، ومحذرة من أن خروجها إلى العلن ما يزال يشكل تهديداً حقيقياً على السلامة العامة.
The Parole Board in Britain has approved the release of inmate Maria Pearson after she spent 39 years in custody, marking the longest sentence served by a woman in the history of British prisons. This decision has been met with strong objections from the victim’s family.
This decision came after nine previous attempts for her release were denied due to her classification as a danger to society. However, the latest review concluded that her level of danger has decreased, allowing for her release under strict supervision measures that include wearing an electronic monitoring bracelet for a full year, and prohibiting her from contacting the victim’s family or entering their residential area.
Motives for the Crime
The case dates back to 1986, when Pearson was convicted of stabbing 23-year-old Janet Newton 17 times to death, motivated by jealousy, believing that the victim was the reason for the end of her romantic relationship.
As a result, she was sentenced to life imprisonment in 1987 with a minimum term of 12 years. However, her nearly four decades behind bars have been marked by negative behavioral reports; she was returned twice from open prisons to closed prisons due to violations of rules and regulations.
Concerns of the Victim’s Family
Throughout her years in prison, Pearson continued to deny the crime and only fully admitted to it in later stages, which fuels the family’s strong rejection of her release decision.
In this context, “Lynn,” the victim’s sister, expressed her deep concern, noting that official reports confirm Pearson’s ongoing struggles with psychological disorders related to rage and reality distortion, warning that her release still poses a real threat to public safety.
