طوت رائدة الطيران الأمريكية «والي فانك» المحطة الأخيرة من رحلتها الملهمة في الحياة، بعد أن رحلت عن عمر ناهز 87 عاماً، تاركةً خلفها إرثاً استثنائياً كسر القيود وحفر اسمها في التاريخ كأكبر امرأة تسافر إلى الفضاء، إثر مسيرة حافلة امتدت لأكثر من 7 عقود في أعالي السماء.
وغادرت فانك عالمنا بسلام داخل منزلها في مدينة «غرايبفاين» بولاية تكساس، محاطة بعائلتها، لتنتهي بذلك قصة كفاح طويلة بدأت شغفها بالطيران منذ نعومة أظافرها؛ إذ وُلدت عام 1939، وشقت طريقها لتصبح أول مفتشة طيران في إدارة الطيران الفيدرالية الأمريكية، وأول محققة سلامة جوية في المجلس الوطني لسلامة النقل، مسجلةً ما يزيد على 30 ألف ساعة طيران، ومشرِفةً على تدريب أكثر من 3 آلاف طيار.
ورغم تفوقها المبكر، واجهت فانك عقبات تاريخية؛ حيث كانت إحدى أبرز طيارات مجموعة «ميركوري 13» اللواتي اجتزن بنجاح الاختبارات البدنية والنفسية الصارمة لوكالة «ناسا» عام 1961، إلا أن حظر مشاركة النساء في رحلات الفضاء آنذاك حرمها من تحقيق حلمها مبكراً. لكن الإصرار لم ينطفئ، وانتظرت 6 عقود كاملة ليتحقق الحلم عام 2021، عندما حلقت إلى الفضاء بعمر 82 عاماً على متن مركبة «نيو شيبرد» التابعة لشركة «بلو أوريجن» برفقة الملياردير جيف بيزوس، مسجلةً رقماً قياسياً في موسوعة غينيس.
ونعت شركة «بلو أوريجن» الراحلة بوصفها «رائدة بكل ما تحمله الكلمة من معنى»، مؤكدة أن قصتها ستظل شعلة تضيء طريق الأجيال القادمة من مستكشفي الفضاء، الذين سيتذكرونها دائماً وهي تُخلّد في قاعة مشاهير الفضاء الدولية، بعد أن نالت في حياتها جائزة «مايكل كولينز» المرموقة لإنجازات العمر من متحف سميثسونيان الوطني.
American aviation pioneer “Wally Funk” has completed the final leg of her inspiring journey in life, passing away at the age of 87, leaving behind an extraordinary legacy that broke barriers and etched her name in history as the oldest woman to travel to space, following a remarkable career that spanned over 7 decades in the skies.
Funk left our world peacefully in her home in Grapevine, Texas, surrounded by her family, thus concluding a long struggle that began with her passion for flying from a young age; she was born in 1939 and paved her way to become the first aviation inspector at the Federal Aviation Administration and the first aviation safety investigator at the National Transportation Safety Board, logging over 30,000 flight hours and overseeing the training of more than 3,000 pilots.
Despite her early achievements, Funk faced historical obstacles; she was one of the prominent pilots of the “Mercury 13” group who successfully passed NASA’s rigorous physical and psychological tests in 1961, but the ban on women’s participation in space flights at that time deprived her of realizing her dream early on. However, her determination did not wane, and she waited a full 6 decades for her dream to come true in 2021, when she flew to space at the age of 82 aboard the “New Shepard” spacecraft from Blue Origin alongside billionaire Jeff Bezos, setting a Guinness World Record.
Blue Origin described the late Funk as “a pioneer in every sense of the word,” affirming that her story will remain a beacon lighting the way for future generations of space explorers, who will always remember her as she is enshrined in the International Space Hall of Fame, after receiving in her lifetime the prestigious “Michael Collins” Lifetime Achievement Award from the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum.
